HARRISBURG- Ridership on Rides Mass Transit District routes for the previous fiscal year increased nearly six percent.
Almost 718,300 passengers utilized public transportation on RMTD's routes in the fiscal year which ended June 30.
"We understand that this growth comes with some challenges and opportunities in terms of transporting so many individuals over such a vast area, but we continue to look for ways to improve our level of service each day," said RMTD operations manager Adam Lach.
RMTD provides door-to-door transportation by serving as the public transit provider in 17 counties in southeastern and east central Illinois.
In addition to travelling locally, passengers can gain access to regional destinations such as St. Louis, Champaign, Springfield, Charleston, Evansville, Ind., Terre Haute, Ind., and Paducah, Ky.
Recently, RMTD has partnered with Southern Illinois University to provide Saluki Express bus services around Carbondale and has broken ground on a new park-and-ride transit hub in Marion which is expected to be completed in 2019.
"We continue to strive to provide the access that residents want and need," said Lach. "People rely on public transportation to get to medical appointments, work, college and to run errands. We're happy to be able to play a role in giving them that access on a daily basis."
RMTD is the largest rural public transit provider in Illinois. More information is available by visiting ridesmtd.com.
